Montréal is a city that celebrates art and culture so it makes sense it is home to some of Canada’s best contemporary art galleries. Whether you’re strolling through the Old Port or are in the heart of downtown it is almost impossible not to stumble into an art gallery in Montréal. During my recent visit to Montréal I had the pleasure of visiting several contemporary art galleries that housed countless creative treasures. It is so exciting to discover new artists from both Canada and around the world! Take a look at some of my favourite contemporary art galleries from Montréal bellow.

GALERIE DE BELLEFEUILLE

Locations: 1366 Greene Avenue, Montreal, Quebec | 1455 Sherbrooke Street West, Montreal, Quebec

Under the leadership of Helen and Jacques Bellefeuille, Galerie de Bellefeuille has become one of Canada’s most recognized independently run art galleries. Galerie de Bellefeuille offers works in all areas of fine Canadian and international art from paintings and prints to photography and sculpture, spotlighting their artist at international art fairs such as Art NY, Art Toronto, Art Palm Beach, Context Art Miami and Expo Chicago. Galerie deBellefeuille also has a location in Toronto’s Yorkville village which I’ve posted about on my Instagram here.

STATION 16

Locations: 3523 Boul St-Laurent Montreal, Quebec | 111 – A de Louvain W Montreal, Quebec

Station 16 Gallery is a contemporary urban art gallery that features an international roster of artists who are influenced primarily by street art and graffiti. The gallery is constantly looking for ways to reinvent itself and to breathe life into the Montréal art scene, exhibiting works of art that challenge the traditional white cube gallery space.

GALERIE D’ART YVES LAROCHE

Location: 6355, Boul. Saint-Laurent Montréal

From its origins in the Old Port of Montréal, to its current location at the junction of the Mile End and Little Italy, the Galerie D’Art Yves Laroche‘s mission remains the same: to showcase the avant-garde in contemporary art. YL has positioned itself at the forefront of Canadian art and remains committed to promoting artists both internationally-established and emerging. Rooted in the underground worlds of tattooing, graffiti, comics, cartoons, pop art, illustration, and surrealism, the art exhibited at Yves Laroche feeds off of an eclectic blend of cultural influences. Supported by its reputation and its presence at several international art fairs, YL offers an urban gallery fundamentally connected to international contemporary production.

GALERIE LEROYER

Location: 60 Saint-Paul St W, Montréal, Quebec 

Established in old Montreal, Galerie LeRoyer has made its home in a historical Neo-Gothic building dating from 1887 and designed by architect John James Browne. Brian Brisson, the gallery’s founder, has conserved the interior’s period charm, with its cabinets of curiosities, mouldings, bas-reliefs and high ceilings. The beautiful gallery space features the works of emerging Canadian and international artists chosen for the power of their singularity.

GALERIE C.O.A.

Location: 6405 St Laurent Blvd, Montréal, Quebec

Galerie C.O.A is a Montreal contemporary art gallery that first opened its doors in May of 2014, offering a creative and playful atmosphere where urban and contemporary art forms converge. Its represented artists hail both from Canada and abroad and, although C.O.A counts a few ubiquitous names on its roster, it mostly focuses on showcasing budding talent. Highly varied in both style and substance, every artist has one point in common: a creative and aesthetic singularity.

PARISIAN LAUNDRY 

Location: 3550 Saint-Antoine St W, Montréal, Quebec 

Parisian Laundry is an expansive 3-storey industrial setting for avant-garde visual & installation art. The gallery is a vast area of ​​15,000 square feet and has a very industrial look and feel. The focus of the gallery is on developing the careers of Canadian and international artists. The gallery space is famous in Montréal and a popular venue for special events and weddings.

MUSÉE D’ART CONTEMPORAIN DE MONTRÉAL

Location: St. Catherine St. W, Montréal, Quebec 

Located in the heart of the Quartier des Spectacles, the Musée d’art contemporain de Montréal makes today’s art a vital part of Montréal and Québec life. For more than fifty years, this vibrant museum has brought together local and international artists, their works and an ever growing public. It is a place of discovery, offering visitors experiences that are continually changing and new, and often unexpected and stirring. Through its exhibitions, artistic performances and festive events, the MAC provides a window onto a myriad of avant-garde expressions that spread the reach of art throughout the city and beyond.
